Carburettors
The very earliest cars had tall dashpots painted gloss black.
Tall carburetor suction chambers, “Dash Pots” with brass hex damper | Standard carburetor suction chambers, “Dash Pots” with round cad plated damper |
SU carburetors are Type H3 for the 2.5 liter and H4 for the 3.5 liter. Early cars have taller dashpot stems, but later cars have shorter dashpot stems (no serial numbers for this change are available). Neither should have chokes or manually operated enrichment levers. The early carbs had spring loaded plungers called “ticklers” on the float bowl chamber lids, but this was deleted on later carbs. (Reilly)
Automatic starting carb located between main carbs, integral with float chamber of rear carb. Cable connection thumb nuts on early cars superceded by wire clip type cap. (SM)
