Polished figured (burl) walnut book matched veneer on instrument panel, windscreen rail fascia (dashboard), cubby box panels and lids, map drawer face, cantrail cappings above doors, upper B door post on saloons, on ash tray lids if fitted to seat backs, door garnish rail (vertical pieces) but not top cappings which are straight grained unveneered wood, Plate N13. Burled only on main visible surfaces, but not exposed edges such as instrument panel sides and round cutouts, nor inside surface of cubby box lids. If the edge is of a thick single piece of wood it was varnished. If a plywood edge, it was covered in single grain veneer and varnished. If a non-exposed edge such as inside a cubby box lid, it was painted brown. If the map drawer has the ashtray, it had polished figured (burl) walnut veneer on the top surface around it. (Sales1)

Ashtrays on early cars are in the map drawer and on the backs of the front seats for saloons and DHC

Later cars had the ashtrays on the screen rail fascia and in the rear door garnish rails for saloons, but nothing was provided for DHC rear passengers. (PC)

The change to the location of the ashtray occurred at the following chassis numbers:

2½ litre SAL  chassis no. 521347-rhd and 527160-lhd
2½ litre DHC chassis no. 540004-rhd and 540003-lhd

Instrument Panel

The instrument panel is the same layout for both MK V models.

Vinyl (except seats)

The door panels, under dash panels, kick panels, saloon center posts, and areas beside the DHC rear seats are covered in Rexine, which was an early form of artificial upholstering material somewhat like vinyl. The color should match the seat upholstery.

Door Panels

Both the Saloon and DHC have Vinyl Door Panels.

There should be no visible screw heads or other fasteners on the door panels as the factory used hidden hairpin spring clips to hold the panels in place.

Saloon Door Panels

The saloons have zippered map pockets in the front doors. After the first 200 saloons, the hinged storage compartments were discontinued in the rear doors.

The very earliest saloons also had hinged storage compartments in the rear doors, but these were deleted after about the first 200 cars.
